DIFFERENT WAYS TO SAY HELLO

As you know one of the first but not less important things we learn in the beginning (when we are learning a new language) is the greetings. In this post, you’ll learn different ways to say hello and you’ll be able to choose the best ways to say hello in Spanish language!

Saying «hello» properly

The basic forms that you have to know are:

  • NO matter the hour of the day saying «HOLA» (hello) is always accepted, so, we can’t forget to say HOLA for starting a conversation.
  • When we are trying to be more formal (whit people we don’t know pretty well or in a formal context), we’ll use «BUENOS DÍAS» (Good morning), «BUENAS TARDES»(Good afternoon/good evening), «BUENAS NOCHES»(Good night)

Phrases you can add in different situations

Depending on your intention or necessities, you can add some «built phrases» like:

  • HOLA(+) ¿CÓMO ESTÁS? (hello, how are you?)
  • HOLA (+) ¿CÓMO VA TU DÍA? (hello, how’s your day going?)
  • HOLA(+) ¿CÓMO HAS ESTADO? (hello, how have you been?)
  • HOLA(+) ¿ESTÁS BIEN?/¿TE ENCUENTRAS BIEN? (hello, are you okay?)
  • HOLA(+) ¿TODO BIEN? (hello, everything okay?)
  • HOLA(+) ¿NECESITAS ALGO? (hello, do you need something?)
  • HOLA(+) ¿NECESITAS AYUDA?/¿PUEDO AYUDARTE?/ ¿PUEDO HACER ALGO POR TI?(Hi! do you need some help?/ /Can I help you? Can I do something for you?)
hello, I've not seen you in ages! spanish

We can see how in a different situation we can use different phrases, for example: If we just want to be polite and start a conversation in a correct way, we’ll use «¿Cómo estás?» but if we have not seen someone in a while, we will use the present perfect: «¿Cómo has estado?».

In a different context, if we met someone and see something is wrong, a polite way to ask is «¿Estás bien? «or even more formal: «¿Te encuentras bien?».

¿te encuentras bien?

It’s also helpful to know how to offer help when we meet someone at work or at life, and we know we can help them doing something, so, in those cases, we can nicely add: «Hola, ¿puedo ayudarte?» or even nicer: «Hola, ¿puedo hacer algo por ti?

Remember: If you wanna add formality, instead of refers to someone in the second grammatical person , use the conjugation of the third. Instead of saying : «¿Te encuentras bien?» you will say: «¿se encuentra bien?»

Another situation happens when we have plenty of confidence in the people we are talking with… in this case, you can relax and be informal!

Saying hello in an informal way

Some of the ways of being informal is using the following phrases:

  • «¿QUÉ ONDA?» (we use it A LOT)
  • «¿QUÉ PASA?» what’s going on?
  • «¿QUÉ HACIENDO?» what are you doing?
  • «¿QUÉ HAY? what’s up?
  • «¿QUÉ HAY DE NUEVO?» (what’s new?)
  • «¿EN QUÉ ANDAS?» (what are you into here)
  • «¿CÓMO VAS?» (how are you doing?)
all spanish, greetings

Now that you’ve learned the best ways to say Hello in the Spanish language, let’s check which are the best ways to say goodbye!
