Verbo ESTAR in Spanish (to be)

Now that you’ve read the article about verbo SER in Spanish (to be), it’s time to complete the lesson reading this small article about the other part of the verb to be , which is the verbo estar in Spanish.

Is well know that verbo ser is by excellence the verb of the existence while verbo estar is just temporary, that’s the reason beyond ontological questions. But the hard part about this is that doesn’t exist anything that lasts forever…then everything is hypothetical temporary, what’s the problem then…the problem is that human beings we don’t think in that way conscious…we thing all my characteristics will last forever, the love I’m feeling now, the nationality of my body, etc… and this, dear students is one of the reasons why «verb to be in Spanish is quite a lot complicated(!)

we’re not studying philosophy, then let’s simplify the points here!

when are we using verbo Estar in Spanish?

We’ll use severaltimes. take note of this points

we use the estar in Spanish when we talk about location, I mean when you arrive at a place, you have to leave that place, right? you are there temporarily. Don’t forget tod the proposition <<EN>>

In this way, we can say phrases like :

  • We are in the boat————————————————————–Nosotros estamos en el bote
  • She’s in the school—————————————————————ella está en la escuela
  • They’ll be at the restaurant—————————————————Ellos estarán en el restaurante»

The next use is very similar… when you talk about the location but into a map…. when we refer to countries or nations…they will hardly change, right?

  • USA is next to México………………………………………………………………… Estados Unidos está junto a México
  • The library is behind the mall……………………………………….. La librería está atrás del centro comercial
  • China is in Asia………………………………………………………………………………………………….. China está en Asia

The next use is when we talk about feelings or moods. Every time when we talk about how we are feeling it’s temporary. We get angry but it’s temporary…even the best feelings like love are temporary.

Despite this, when we refer to the feelings as a personal characteristic we use «SER» because we want to think they will last forever.
